Summary

Mike Monroe and Jane Baxter barely survived their terrifying journey to the center of the Earth。 But a burning curiosity still tormented them about the origins of the pale creatures in the stygian darkness of the caves, and why were their dreams also haunted by something huge and monstrous that seemed as old as time itself?

Now, news of a Russian military expedition has forced their hands, and also meant they must go back to a place they swore they’d never return。 But this time they’re going with a team of highly skilled mercenaries and scientists to help them track the Russians and also help unlock the secrets hidden at the center of the planet。

But what they find is something that evolution created in an environment vastly different to that of the benign world of the surface。 And something that waits eagerly for their return。

Return to the Center of the Earth is the sequel to the bestselling action/adventure blockbuster To the Center of the Earth and ramps up the thrills and terror in an awe-inspiring story that will leave readers gasping for breath。

This book is really a continuation of the first book, rather than a sequel。 If you liked the first, you'll probably like the second。 For me, the second book is weaker。 SPOILERS: Everything dealing with the military aspects of the US-Soviet schemes and confrontation were unreal and awkward。 I know that it's a plot device driving the new expeditions below the surface, but it didn't make very much sense。 The author has effectively taken one book and split it into two。 It's a common practice in the This book is really a continuation of the first book, rather than a sequel。 If you liked the first, you'll probably like the second。 For me, the second book is weaker。 SPOILERS: Everything dealing with the military aspects of the US-Soviet schemes and confrontation were unreal and awkward。 I know that it's a plot device driving the new expeditions below the surface, but it didn't make very much sense。 The author has effectively taken one book and split it into two。 It's a common practice in the book industry, but still a bit of a rip-off。 。。。more

This was disturbing。。。 I mean, I liked it a lot even though sometimes the plot was predictable。But the end was just。。。 I almost suspected this but nontheless it was cruel to read and I felt sorry。This was a great book and I'd read it all over again! Return To The Center Of The Earth was another outstanding read from Greig Beck。 It’s the sequel to To The Center Of The Earth and finds the heroes from the original tricked into going back again。 Of course, more mayhem ensues。It’s full of constant, non-stop thrills, gory mayhem and little time to catch one’s breath。 The writing was superb with solid third-person limited and past-tense writing。 The narrative was brisk and never bogged down with endless exposition。 While there were plenty of detai Return To The Center Of The Earth was another outstanding read from Greig Beck。 It’s the sequel to To The Center Of The Earth and finds the heroes from the original tricked into going back again。 Of course, more mayhem ensues。It’s full of constant, non-stop thrills, gory mayhem and little time to catch one’s breath。 The writing was superb with solid third-person limited and past-tense writing。 The narrative was brisk and never bogged down with endless exposition。 While there were plenty of detailed descriptions to paint a vivid picture of the fantastic underworld, these descriptions were still brief and to the point。 The author wasted no space rambling。The story moved, he drew a great cast of characters, and came up with a host of nightmarish icky bugs, enough to keep me satisfied。 I even got claustrophobic at times as he described some of the caving。While some of the same stuff was revisited, there were plenty of new surprises added plus new plotting to make this a great sequel。 I had a fun time right to the very end。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

This was so much better than the first one! It was so tense and gory! I wasn’t expecting the gore and horror after reading the first one。 And that ending! Oh my goodness。。。。。 I couldn’t believe it! She (I won’t say who) did not deserve that ending :’( But I loved every minute of this!! I hope there’s another one!

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series。 The concept was great, the action spot-on, and the book felt "adventurous"。 However, the sequel did not impress me。 The story moved along rather slowly, and the constant explanation of evolutionary processes bored me。 The book feels like a low budget Hallmark movie - not bad, but not great。Perhaps the novelty of the first book has worn off, and there is no way the sequel could live up to it。 However, it still feels that the sequel lacked gloss。 I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series。 The concept was great, the action spot-on, and the book felt "adventurous"。 However, the sequel did not impress me。 The story moved along rather slowly, and the constant explanation of evolutionary processes bored me。 The book feels like a low budget Hallmark movie - not bad, but not great。Perhaps the novelty of the first book has worn off, and there is no way the sequel could live up to it。 However, it still feels that the sequel lacked gloss。 The first book had loads of atmosphere, and I felt that I was there。 The sequel felt like a rush job and wasn't as polished。 It felt as though scenes were individually written and hastily put together。 The editing of the story doesn't match Greig Beck's usual standards。 While I don't want to give any spoilers away, the end especially also left me uncomfortable。 It was unnecessary and grotesque。But the book is still an enjoyable read。 If I read it first, I would probably have given it 3。5 stars。 It has a bit of the last Indiana Jones movie, Kingdom of the Chrystal Skull, feel to it。 Yes, it is the same characters in the same world, but somehow, it just doesn't live up to those before。 I still enjoyed it but feel just a little cheated – perhaps I was expecting just too much from the sequel。 。。。more

As with Mike and Jane's first journey to the center of the earth, the Return to the Center of the Earth was equally outstanding with new characters and numerous new creatures (and beings) to enhance the storyline。 As with Mike and Jane's first journey to the center of the earth, the Return to the Center of the Earth was equally outstanding with new characters and numerous new creatures (and beings) to enhance the storyline。 。。。more

So in Return to the Center of the Earth, the plot seemed to be unable to replicate the “magic” of the first book。 The caving atmosphere and theme is mostly absent。 Instead the plot starts out as and for a while looks like it will solely be an international politics and war thriller with the creatures and the center of the earth being only a backdrop。 The earthquake volcano bombs used to blow up American bases by the Russians just was too corny for me。 Also, that epilogue, while true to the story So in Return to the Center of the Earth, the plot seemed to be unable to replicate the “magic” of the first book。 The caving atmosphere and theme is mostly absent。 Instead the plot starts out as and for a while looks like it will solely be an international politics and war thriller with the creatures and the center of the earth being only a backdrop。 The earthquake volcano bombs used to blow up American bases by the Russians just was too corny for me。 Also, that epilogue, while true to the story, just didn’t need to be there。 It can be vaguely hinted at implied at like the story had set up for, but the author didn’t need to full on depict and describe it。 There’s just some things better left not done。 Like seriously, why? Those two pages were not necessary。 But, since the author has done this, I feel Greig Beck is obligated to create a third story where they go back for Ally to save her from her fate after Mike and Jane have left so many others behind for dead (however hard it may have seemed to retrieve them)。 #SaveAlly Read the rest of this and other reviews on my blog at https://theowllightlibrary。wordpress。。。。 。。。more

Greig Beck is one of my favourite authors when it comes to this genre and it was very interesting to read this book。Jane and Mike barely survived, the last time they went to the centre of the earth, but they are going back。 With a crack team to support and protect them, but still。。。 Along the way, they encounter all sorts of beasties, most of them hostile, in a world which is clearly nothing like anything they are familiar with。The author has an incredible imagination, clearly, and I always get Greig Beck is one of my favourite authors when it comes to this genre and it was very interesting to read this book。Jane and Mike barely survived, the last time they went to the centre of the earth, but they are going back。 With a crack team to support and protect them, but still。。。 Along the way, they encounter all sorts of beasties, most of them hostile, in a world which is clearly nothing like anything they are familiar with。The author has an incredible imagination, clearly, and I always get pulled into whatever world he goes into。 I wonder how many members of a team are going to survive to the end of the book and what gruesome thing happens to them along the way - all part of the process with these kinds of books。Good, solid book。 4。5 stars from me。 。。。more

Repeated horrorOkay, after the first kinda kinda know what to expect。 But still there are twists, turns and as always with Greek the unexpected rises。 Not a bad follow-up at all。 Enjoyed very much

Welcome back to the center of the earth - place of tremendous danger and Mikes personal seduction chamber。 Both times he was doing everything to seduce poor, helpless Jane。 Funny。The plot in this book is basically the same as in first one。 Only difference was that, if in the first one everyone went down just for fun and games, now it was for the country。 Rest stays the same - people went down, mostly everyone died。 I was actually rooting for the deaths of main characters, but no luck thereI thin Welcome back to the center of the earth - place of tremendous danger and Mikes personal seduction chamber。 Both times he was doing everything to seduce poor, helpless Jane。 Funny。The plot in this book is basically the same as in first one。 Only difference was that, if in the first one everyone went down just for fun and games, now it was for the country。 Rest stays the same - people went down, mostly everyone died。 I was actually rooting for the deaths of main characters, but no luck thereI think the dual story telling in this book was worse than in the first story。 First one was shorter and everything came together much sooner。The story itself was nothing special。 Pretty straight forward and not very interesting。I was very disappointed by the ending。 。。。more

A visual experience of terrorWhat a great read of a long time classic set in today's world。 The imagery put me right next to the characters feeling the environment and their fears。 This is a fabulous adventure。 Didn't want it to end。Looking forward to reading more of his books。 A visual experience of terrorWhat a great read of a long time classic set in today's world。 The imagery put me right next to the characters feeling the environment and their fears。 This is a fabulous adventure。 Didn't want it to end。Looking forward to reading more of his books。 。。。more

Another winner。I had read the original Jules Verne story, and seen the movie starring James Mason, and thoroughly enjoyed them。 Greig Beck's take on the original was very well done, and I enjoyed it as well。So, I followed along on this second adventure to the center of the Earth。 The dangers are still there, the creatures are even more hideous and ruthless, and the stakes are higher。Beware the ending though, for a couple of characters it is devastating。If you've enjoyed his other books, you will Another winner。I had read the original Jules Verne story, and seen the movie starring James Mason, and thoroughly enjoyed them。 Greig Beck's take on the original was very well done, and I enjoyed it as well。So, I followed along on this second adventure to the center of the Earth。 The dangers are still there, the creatures are even more hideous and ruthless, and the stakes are higher。Beware the ending though, for a couple of characters it is devastating。If you've enjoyed his other books, you will like this one。 If you haven't read any others by him, pick up the first one and let the reimagining of Jules Verne's story carry you away to a world of danger and horror that Lovecraft might enjoy。 。。。more

A race to avert disasterEven better than the first book chronicling the first descent。 The added element of a deadly race with a russian team which could initiate WW3 ramps up the tension amid the constant horrors faced by both sides。 Action packed horror at its very best。

OMG what did I just read。。。。。that ending got me。 I loved the new creatures in this one and how they seem to have intelligence even if it's basic this time。 I love the fact that the two worlds seem to be merging a bit too。 The field of scarecrows。。。。。that one will stay with me for a while。 This truly was a horror ride and I'm not sure which one is worse this or the first。 I feel for Ally so much she's going to be in hell for quite awhile。 OMG what did I just read。。。。。that ending got me。 I loved the new creatures in this one and how they seem to have intelligence even if it's basic this time。 I love the fact that the two worlds seem to be merging a bit too。 The field of scarecrows。。。。。that one will stay with me for a while。 This truly was a horror ride and I'm not sure which one is worse this or the first。 I feel for Ally so much she's going to be in hell for quite awhile。 。。。more
